Even in a brightly lit room, you can see when the front light is on. It makes the screen more contrast-y. So they have a reason, even if I do agree you could get by with the light off.

On my Kobo I have the light set somewhere around 25-30% and out of sheer laziness, I don't adjust it however bright the lights are. But even in a bright room, I can tell if the light is on or off.
