The article mentions Ryan Raffaelli is an associate professor at Harvard Business School, and he is working on a full study will come out next year. He attributes the resurgence of small book stores to what he calls the “three C’s” -
community, curation, and convening.
Interesting article, and good to see small book stores are on the rise!

I tried to read the article but didn't want to sign up or connect with Facebook.
I read these stories and in general think they are written by people who never leave New York.
Out in the Houston suburbs where I live, there's Barnes and Noble, Fat Ogre Comics and Games and a few used book stores (fewer than there used to be).
I'm all for indie book stores, but I think stories about their rise is about as true as the stories about the fall of e-books.
