How many books do you have on board? Is it possible you have more books on board than the Kindle can easily handle?
Also is the battery holding up okay? If not it might be a problem with indexing a book. That could possibly slow your Kindle down and would make the battery drain pretty quickly. You can check this by doing a search on the home page for some nonsense word it can't find, such as zstrypsps. It'll search each book that's been indexed and give you the titles of any that haven't been indexed yet. If you do get an unindexed book it might be wise to delete it from the device and download it again.
Neither of these things sounds like an exact match to your problem but they're close enough that they're worth looking into.
