At least in English, Kindle is known for having a better dictionary than the competitors.

I like Kobo's software better than the rest. But then I also like to tinker with the device. I had to patch and alter Kobo to get it where I like it. For an out of the box simple solution, I'd recommend a Kindle over a Kobo.

I'd also recommend the cheaper Paperwhite over the Voyage or Oasis if you are just starting out. But that's just me.
