Possible to do what?
It is possible to jail break that version.
The current firmware (after you JB it) is 5.9.2, and next to nothing has been posted here about that version. You will have to discover for yourself.
Do not let it update.
Until you decide if you will jail break the device.
If you decide to jail break it, even if you may not be able to turn the lights off, post here.

The screen does not have a back light.
The screen only has a front light.
It does not draw enough power to make a noticeable difference to the run-time of the battery at any setting.
Certainly not at the lowest setting. The light can not been seen in a dark room unless you take the bezel off.
You would do better for power saving if you just have Amazon remove the special offers.
That way it would not be trying to call home at regular intervals to check for new advertisements.
