Kindle Keyboard (unable to update or register)

My husband has recently found / received a Kindle 3 (Keyboard).
It was unregistered when he received it, though there were some books remaining on it.
We have since reset it to factory default a couple of times.
It is a WiFi only model, and it had been unused long enough that the battery was totally drained.
I charged it by plugging it into my computer overnight. It will connect to our wifi network. I am able to browse the kindle store on it, and search for titles.

He does have an amazon account, which is linked to my prime account.
When we try to register his Kindle, it says that it cannot connect. Tells me to check our network connection and try again later. (It also says that the device can be registered online by going to a specific URL on Amazon, I think amazon.com/registermykindle)

It is also on the 3.4 software, and we cannot get it to accept the 3.4.2 software. we can see the .bin file on the kindle when we look in the File Explorer, but the update this kindle selection on the menu remains greyed out. (we are both running Linux on our systems.) I think this may be the main issue, and if we can get it updated, we will be able to get it registered.

He will probably end up doing a jailbreak on his Kindle at some point, especially if that is one of the best ways to get it fixed.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.
