But given that you want to download to be able to then transfer to Calibre, I suggest a Windows tablet. An iOS or Android tablet won't work so well for that. A Windows tablet will work. I have an iPad and a Surface Pro 2 and if I was to download eBooks for transfer to Calibre, I would use the Surface.

My main reading device is a Kindle Fire (purchased in July '17). I have tried a larger tablet and I hated it. For anything other than reading I prefer my laptop. The eInk is just for reading in the sun or transfer documents/certain books to Calibre. I use to use my Kindle Keyboard for those things but it died a couple of years ago and I have never replaced it.
