That was then, this is now. The cost of everything has skyrocketed, while student wages have crawled upwards. When I was in school many could earn enough in their summer jobs to easily pay for the school year away from home. You'd have to earn thirty thousand dollars clear today in the three summer months to cover the costs of doing the same where I live now.

Another difference is that we were all reading physical books when I was in school. The important ones got passed around so that they could be discussed and enjoyment shared. If you wanted your own copy, you could find it in a used bookstore for cheap. If we all had to buy new copies ourselves to read like you do with ebooks, there would have been a lot less shared culture.
