Avoiding OTA updates

I've bought my parents a couple of Kobo e-readers for Christmas. I've used Kobo readers for years, and I use a bunch of patches (fullscreen and others). It's never been a big deal for me, I sideload all my books and usually leave WiFi turned off so I've never personally worried about OTA updates cloberring my installation.

But now I'd like to sideload a bunch of old public domain books and put some patches on their e-readers, while allowing them to buy books from Kobo with wifi turned on.

Is there an easy way to let them still access the Kobo store while making sure they don't get new firmware updates (and clobber patches) without my intervention?
