I've never argued the "author still gets paid angle," only the morality of purposeful lying for personal gain. People are free to decide for themselves whether or not they're OK with lying to get an ebook they want (or what lies they personally consider harmless); their conscience is their own. But there's no arguing that lying for personal, gain carries inherent moral implications.
