Jen,
When you are in the forum and see the list of message, at the top of the list there is a blue "menu" bar. Right above that on the left corner is a little blue box/link that says "New Thread". that is how you start a new post/thread.
Give it a try in the introduce yourself forum if you haven't already figured it out by now.
