Looks aren't everything - but physical design is a factor and I did not care for the physical design of the Kindle 1.

One of the biggest sticking points for me (since I'm not really all that concerned about Whispernet) was that the Kindle 1 only had four gray scales. It's more expensive than the Sony and I wasn't going to pay a surcharge for an inferior screen. The Kindle 2 has a better screen and more internal storage - these are the real features that make it attractive to me. Increased internal storage is a big plus for me because not only does it give faster access than an SD card, but it also cuts an additional power drain which helps with battery life.

But to be honest, I'm completely within my rights to base my choice on any factor I want so long as I'm spending my money. It may not make sense to anyone else, but it doesn't have to. I'll buy what I want based on my own criteria and be very happy.

Right now I'm thinking the Kindle 2 has enough to offer of what's important to me to outweigh the lower price and local availability of the Sony.
