The Fire HD 8 is a great size for reading. Screen resolution is better than the 7-inch, you'll appreciate the longer battery life, and the dual speakers sound very good.

I'm quite happy with this case for mine: Poetic Slimline Premium Fabric Slim-Fit Lightweight Trifold Cover with Auto Sleep/Wake Amazon Fire HD 8 2017. It's only $6.95 right now, which is a great price (I paid more)! It does tend to fray around the edges, but that hasn't been a big issue for me.
