organizing the originals

Strictly speaking, this isn't a Calibre question, but I don't know where else to ask.

It's often a good idea to keep extra copies, of important files, outside your Calibre library. I had a folder of works I'd imported into Calibre, but sometimes I'd have 2 or 3 differently-formatted pdfs of the same work [one of them printer-friendly]. Importing all of them into Calibre would be senseless duplication. Importing some would mean splittng whatever folder I'd used to organize them.

I've though about using tags, or even filename suffixes, to keep track of imported and non-imported files in the same folder.

What works for you?
