Kindle firmware ignores bunch of HTML elements and formatting (bold, italic, alignment, hyphens... ) when it displays footnote in a pop-up.
Only if you click on that link to take you to the actual place in the book where the footnote is you'll see all & correct formatting.

There is nothing to be done about it. Blame Amazon.
