Finally achieved my goal.

I found an rss reader that is properly formatted for eink use.

(You have to create an account at inoreader, and configure your feeds there.)
He actually did it for the Kindle, but I won't hold that against him.

Anyway, with NovaLauncher, I'm all set.
I can read my books, and get my updated news.

Now if only there were better news to read!
