while from a purely engineering standpoint, putting the lights on the long side would give the best overall uniformity and lessen the measurable gradient.
yet, as people have pointed out, i think the issue here is how we read and how a left-right gradient is more problematic (even if smaller than the top-bottom one) since that is the direction ones eyes scan primarily while reading. (they traverse the left right direction rather quickly, yet are only gradually moving in the up-down direction, relatively speaking)
i am guessing/speculating, however, that another main reason Amazon R&D went with the side LEDs was a consequence of having a thicker asymmetric design. it probably was not possible (or more difficult) to put LEDs on the short face if they wanted to allow the device to be ultra thin away from the "holding area". of course, this design choice may also have been made with the engineering (not practical experience) of reducing gradients along the long axis of the device.
for me...
i am still waiting anxiously for my refurbished Oasis 1 to arrive later today. and yet, as i have been waiting for it, i've continued to try to use the Oasis 2:
i have observed the following with the KO2: (which will be going back in the next few days due to my hand fatigue issues): there is a gradient L/R on my device, but it's more noticeable at certain lighting intensities. and to be really picky, it's not just L/R but it still has some nonuniformity in the up down direction on a couple of the light settings.
let me try to explain: IF we can assume that the color tone want to be uniformly spread across the screen is that seen on the thick side of the device (Right for me, and for this discussion) and call that "white", then i am finding that the screen is the "most yellow" in the upper left portion of the screen. yet, this varies depending on backlighting. if i have the backlight from 0-7, the screen to my eye is extremely uniform. this is also true from 11+ onward. yet in between there, the gradients go from subtle to very clearly present, and i think it was at level 9, that i saw basically an mirrored "7" shaped region of yellow where it was clearly yellow for about 1" on the left hand side of the device and also yellow about 2-2.5" away from the left side from the top of the device, about 2.5" down.
in the end, if it wasn't for hand comfort issues, i may have kept the device because in reality, i usually am in the 6-8 backlight range while reading in the dark of our bedroom. it was only in odd in between lighting (dim family room) where auto-brightness set things in the 9-10 range that i saw the gradient. this "worse case" gradient would easily be overcome with a level 11-12 lighting which while a little bright, is not blinding in any way.
i think i'm really going to miss the 7" screen. it's been a pleasure to see significantly more text at one time.
