i think that as the response show, the answers are more complex than the poll choices are offering. and even if that isn't the case, one's decision may change at a later point in time. in the early days of ebooks, there was no clear winner in the choice of formats. 10 to 15 years later, amazon's format and epub/pdf are the clear winners. and there are other specialty formats used for graphic novels as well. free books were my initial motivators. my first e-ink device was the first commercially released device in the u.s. by sony, the PRS-500. with this, i was able to read library books and those in the public domain (mainly from project gutenberg). then i got a kindle because of all of the free offerings from amazon. of course, these free offers were part of a series, designed to whet your appetite to buy the rest of the series. so i end up with two readers because each cannot handle the format used in the other.

and then calibre comes along and makes it easier to convert from one format to another. with this, ebook format is much less of a factor than all other features. so how someone decides will change over time.
