All of the iLiad screens are fairly fragile. You want to be really careful to protect them from any impact or heavy weight. Usually the covers you get for them have a hard shell in the front to protect the screen. They don't "spontaneously" break, but you do need to be careful with them.
I wouldn't be too worried about having a v1 design versus a v2. However, what you may want to consider is that it is very expensive to have the screen repaired. The cost is something like half the price of a brand new iLiad. It might be a better idea to buy a new one just so that you have a 1 year warranty on it going forward. Otherwise you'll pay a lot of money to get your v1 repaired, and still not have a warranty if anything happens again.
Did the person who sold the v1 iLiad to you make you aware that it had a broken screen and that it would be very expensive to fix? Unless you got it for really cheap it sounds like you got ripped off.
