I think it was Microsoft making a so-called "clean break" from the past. Supposedly (at least I think I've read this) Windows 10 will be continually upgraded without changing versions. I just settle the issue by calling Windows 8.1, "Windows 9." From what I've seen in 8.0, 8.1 really does bridge the gap between 8.0 and 10.
