How big is the text file? The Kobo firmware does handle text files, but there is a maximum size it will handle. From memory, it is 2MB and anything bigger than this is ignored.

For the ePub version, I don't know of a size limit. I don't think I've tried anything past 100MB, but I've gotten fairly close. An epub being ignore is usually a problem with the contents of the file. Usually an error in the OPF or NCX files. There are also some characters in the file name that will mean the file gets ignored or causes other problems. And if the name of the file or directory it is in starts with a dot, it will be ignored.

Did the importing screen get displayed when you ejected the device? If not, then the files weren't seen. If it was, then the epub probably has problems. Running an error check in either the calibre editor or Sigil will hopefully show what is wrong.
