With regard to a misbehaving Firefox and Thunderbird...
- I've created a new profile and deleted the old one.
- I've updated all the drivers, except those for the Intel Graphics card; the driver I'm using is the last one with Gamma Correction (Intel removed this setting from newer versions, and I've ranted about that before).
- I've removed the Intel Rapid Storage driver, which I installed more than a year ago to circumvent some sort of bug/regression in Windows; with the standard drivers, the computer would freeze randomly. Installing RST fixed that. (And I've ranted about that as well.)
At this time, Firefox and Thunderbird seem to behave normally again, not hanging the computer for a second or so when starting or performing an action such as opening a tab/e-mail. As I've not done anything to Thunderbird, the fix must have been one of the driver updates or the removal of RST.
Sometimes, I hate computers. As Dijkstra said somewhere in the 60's: If we would build houses like we build software, everything would fall apart days after being finished.
