I'm not a romance reader myself. But I bet those covers that readers are embarrassed for others to see probably also at least helped convince them to buy the book in the first place.

I like schlocky horror novels and the covers have actually been toned down, over all. I (and many others) have a soft spot for the overly lurid covers that were so popular in the '80's.
