Anyway, to be fair:
-- if the glance is quick (driving a car, arm distance) than you miss the extra dimension given by colour
-- if you keep it on constant wake (e.g. through GPS), the battery will drop pretty fast, in a few hours.
But in general and otherwise - yes, it's certainly a good idea!
By the way (not expressed in that thread, I believe): you can modify Mobac (Mobile Atlas Creator) to create PNG16 maps

In other terms, figure whole regions in very high detail in under 4 gigabytes... Because of course your interest is a good offline storage, that you may hook to GPS upon need.
