I'm not quite as excited as last month, but this month's free Logos book is still pretty good. It's Jesus and the Witness of Outsiders, one of Logos' "Mobile Ed" series of short courses. It's essentially a one hour lecture presented by Craig Evans, split into a number of short (3-7 minutes each) videos. A transcript is included, along with several quizzes and a final exam.

The content of the lecture is great. Evans considers himself an evangelical and though he's not quite as conservative as many apologists (he's not a biblical inerrantist, for example), he does consider the gospels to be historically reliable in general. Those interested in the historical Jesus, but that find the likes of Bart Ehrman or John Dominic Crossan are too theologically liberal may really enjoy listening to Evans.

My only beef is with the Logos software. The lectures are available as either audio-only or video, but must be listened to or viewed within the software. The media can be downloaded for use offline in the PC software, but the mobile Logos app only allows streaming. I can't really complain for a free product, but that limitation seriously tempers my willingness to spend $40 on another lecture, or even $10 for the additional discounted offering.

The Logos free book of the month

The free book from Verbum is Worship in the Early Church: An Anthology of Historical Sources, vol. 1 by Lawrence J. Johnson. This volume includes a number of Jewish and Christian writings that helped shape early Christianity. It includes such gems as The Didache, The Shepherd of Hermas, and Irenaeus' Against Heresies.

The companion discount to the freebie is volume 2 for $1.99.

As long as you're picking up free books to read in Logos, you may want to check Vyrso, as well. Vyrso is the storefront for more popular (as opposed to scholarly) ebooks in the Logos format.
