Other programs don't freeze the cursor when starting or updating.... except... Thunderbird.
Besides a compact theme and an adblocker with a whitelist for often-visited sites, I have no extensions installed; even so, disabling both doesn't help.
The only conclusion I can draw is that 'something' has changed in Mozilla's XUL framework.
