OK, so amazon did try to help me with this, and updated from their end. Went through various steps, the usual restarting, side loading, etc. etc.
I found the problem myself - the publisher had changed the supplied cover image to one in landscape format. So I added a version in portrait and sent it to my Voyage, where it now displays perfectly.
Good to get to the bottom of this, and amazon or the publisher can now correct the book so no-one else experiences this hell.
