Thanks. I quite agree with your comments. I think that for most books illustrations and covers can be omitted without much harm; they are adjuncts to the text but not as important as the text. So if the statement I suggested goes up as an official part of MR policy and the copyright to a cover or illustrations cannot be found and they are essential to the book then that book cannot be part of the MR library. If the cover and illustrations are not vital to the book then the statement could require that they be omitted if copyright cannot be found.
