What might have happened was that your unit was swaped out
for a new one and upon inspecting and testing the new reader, they
didn't dim or shut the lights off and use the reader with LEDs turned on
to check for dust. In daylight the dust is nearly impossible to detect.
SO they figured the unit functions and shipped it to you.

You should have attached instructions or a note on how to test the unit
in the dark with LEDs turned on and THEN look for dust.

sorry to hear that.. it does suck. You could buy a new one at the
retail level and then swap the unit and return the one with dust
and let sonystyle deal with it internally. *this does not always work*
but worth a try...
