I think they must do that. I installed the new update on my older phone and even though I have a large Kindle library (1034 books) it's just taking 421 meg on it.
I plan to uninstall and re-install the Kindle app on my current phone but I haven't done that yet. It's currently using 2.46 gig. My guess is it'll be greatly reduced.
I wonder if what happens is that as time goes by each new book I buy sends a thumbnail to the app so it builds up over time. The one that has only 421 meg has only had a Kindle app on it for a few weeks.
I'll know more in a couple of days.
