Naively I thought Kindle OS was more stable than PCs and glitches indicated a hardware issue rather than in the Windows world where the OS is so flaky that it just gets unstable for no external reason and "reboot" is the answer to 90% of problems.

Hi. No one was implying that you don't know how to reboot.
If you get a helpful yet useless to you answer, do not take it personally. 90% of the time, the OP doesn't realize most problems can be solved by either a reboot or a charge so you got the standard answer which may help someone else.
Now is it a common problem, I don't know about your particular device, but lights and beeps failing are fairly common across everything. So are glitches.
