A. The only Kindle I've ever used without a case was my first, the DX. I haven't seen the actual backs of my two Paperwhites for more than ten minutes in the time I've had them. When swapping cases is about it.
B. When I reading, I am normally sitting where it's reasonably warm, wearing flannel pajamas if necessary. I would also wear gloves if it were cold. To me, this is like waterproofing so I can read in the rain. I've never felt the need to read my Kindle in the rain.
C. I believe the Voyage has a metal back. I've heard no complaints related to the back.
