Are you sure about the chemistry, there?
I'm curious if vinegar (an acid) will actually neutralize any acid (acid from an alkaline battery??), and if so, how baking soda, an alkaline, could do it too...but admittedly, I was better at physics than chemistry.
I'm sure either will do fine cleaning the mess, though.
