Oh wait, he could do like some people and sort them by cover color.

Ya, physical books wouldn't work at all for this but it doesn't sound like that is the worry here.
I did see a thread about that on a different forum though...

I've decided to really catalog my library. I'm talking real deal, card catalog type stuff here....
The original system I started was rather simple - but I'd forgotten it until recently:
It was:
B=book
C= case
+ Shelf Number
+ Genre
= BC5 Nonfiction
That didn't work well. I needed to drill down further, so I came up with:
Bookcase Name: Epic Fantasy
Code: EF
Bookcase Name: Urban Fantasy, Sci-Fi & YA
Code: USY
Bookcase Name: Epic & Urban Fantasy SM
Code: EUF
Bookcase Name: Romance & Non-Fiction
Code: RNF
Bookcase Name: Mystery, Non-Fiction & SpecFict
Code: MNS
S=Shelf
P= Position
=EFS4P11 = Polgara the Sorceress
Polgara the Sorceress is on in the Epic Fantasy bookcase, shelf 4, position #11
I LOVED this...
...until I realized that I did not take into account that my library is a living, growing organism that will change in the very near future.

And on an on...
Organizing physical books is a much different problem than organizing ebooks. One of the many reasons I like ebooks these days.
