What you didn't mention, was the two images are of different edges of the Kindle.
I.E: If you call one a picture of the top edge, the other one is an image of the bottom edge.
P.S: You do know that applications such as Gimp and Photoshop exist, right?

Ah, good catch! That's far less exciting but probably it - from what I can tell the top edge has an extruded power button, the same colour as the aluminum casing but would fit that rounded shape.
In the splash image it does look black and recessed, but could very well be a black rubberized power button instead of a port.
Edit: Re. photoshop/gimp - haha yes, what I was getting at in my post was that it looked at a glance like Amazon photoshop'd a different port onto the Oasis 2 - I thought it might be fun to speculate why they might post that (either as a mistake, a deliberate thing, or something else), but it turns out it's probably just the power button.
