OK I think you're right that there is something wrong with the book.
I grabbed the original epub created by Calibre and checked if it validates using
http://validator.idpf.org/. It throws several errors.
I spent some time trying to correct these errors but as I know _nothing_ about the epub format I ended up replacing my errors with other ones.
Then I tried to convert the .azw3 (which had been created by Calibre from the epub) to epub -> Calibre failed. So I still don't know exactly what's wrong with the book but I know that something is.
Now I have to figure out whether this is good or bad news.
