My suspicion is that they did not want to increase the device size too much (with the page turning button side being already quite large) while still offering a noticeably larger screen and retaining the 4:3 aspect ratio, probably for easy of software adaptation and consistency across all devices.
Ideally, with the Oasis form factor, they would have gone for a longer but less wide display to retain device proportions and come closer to the actual “aspect ratio” of an actual book (like for example Sony did with the PRS 900 and 950).
