Most books purchased from Amazon are delivered in KFX format. Enhanced typesetting, which includes automatic hyphenation and the option to switch between full and left justification, is only enabled for books in KFX format. You can create and sideload books in KFX format using a calibre plugin.

If you wish to stick with KF8 (.azw3) format you can use the Hyphenate This calibre plugin to add soft hyphens that will enable hyphenation to allow better spacing of words per line.

As others have mentioned, some functionality is not enabled until you register the device.
