However, I just loaded a pdf that is all high resolution images of pages. Before page turns were unbearably slow -- maybe 5 seconds before I got a clear image. Now I get an image in a second or so. Panning the zoomed page is still annoying, but only a little slower than it is for text pages now. This seems like a huge improvement, despite the extra screen blinks and panning issues.

You might want to try installing Koreader on your Kobo. The PDF experience tends to be much better on Koreader.
