In my last house, I had an Instahot, which was WONDERFUL. I don't have one here, which is a source of...let's say, a small amount of familial friction. I think that they are the BEST. THING. EVER., but of course, Mr. H, being a guy (don't start, guys), thinks that's why God makes Microwaves, so at the moment, I microwave my coffee-water. (Not the same, and no, I'm not going to debate physics.)

And it's not that the flop-over is such a disaster itself, but rather that it's become a consistent harbinger of doom. The world caves in on me on flop-over days.
Perhaps it's a self-fulfilling prophecy? Perhaps the lack of proper coffee affects your synapses?

Had one for ages.

The one bit I miss was a feature of an older coffee maker. It had a timer, so I could load it the previous night, and the drip cycle began when the timer went off, so I could awaken to fresh brewed coffee.
OMG, yes. I would give probably some relatively-unused body parts if I could figure out how to make my FP do my coffee automatically. As I rise first nowadays, my former automatic FP coffee maker (Mr. H) is out of commission.

A friend is currently in Malta for a vacation, and offered to bring me back some Maltese coffee. Sure. But as I understand it, Maltese coffee as served is much like Turkish coffee, where you get something like coffee syrup as the end result, sipped delicately from tiny cups.

It reminds me of the old Western recipe for chuckwagon style coffee: you put a pound of coffee in a small pot. You add a little water, and boil for an hour. You test by putting in a spoon. If the spoon sinks, you add more coffee.
I've had real chuckwagon coffee--or as real as it gets, in the last century and this, and it, too, has that thick, gooey, pops your brain into overdrive status.

I'm one of those folks who isn't fully functional till after coffee, and I've been known to ask at Starbucks and the like whether I can get it with an IV drip...

Yeah, me too. I used to be worse--I mean, coffee, morning, noon, night...but as I've, er, seasoned, I've had to cut back. I've been an insomniac since the earliest I can remember, and now, coffee after noon seems to impact my ability to get to sleep, no matter how much I exercise, melatonin, etc. SAD, 'cuz, yes, I love my coffee. Which is why I want my morning coffee to be as perfect as it can be--I pretty much only get one (very large, granted) cup a day, so I want it to be right.
