Sorting of Authors actually makes use of the Author_Sort field rather than the Authors field. However the default for this is ‘lastname, firstname(s)’ but the default rule for deriving this from the Authors field is going to be completely messed up if you include series information in the Authors field.
Is there any reason you are not using the series and associated series_index fields for this purpose? That is after all what they are designed for. If it is for sorting on the reading device, then Calibre has specific features for massaging the Metadata and/or filename when a book is sent to a device.
