Hamilton's a master of the Unnecessarily Long Infodump! Still ... those first two books of the Commonwealth Saga were--by far--my favorites by him (yet).

I'm just starting Stanley J. Weyman's The Castle Inn from our very own library (thanks GrannyGrump!).
