The KindleUnpack plugin for Calibre can easily separate the duel-format file into Mobi & KF8. You can also do so with the CLI based KindleUnpack, but for most people, the Calibre plugin is easier to use.

I've seen a number of .mobi eBooks turn out to be dual-format eBooks because when they were made, they were converted from the ePub using Kindlegen.
