Maybe try a small collection recepticle underneath the mail slot or something outside the door?
The flourescent lightbulbs propped against the door is just stupid. No one's going to see them before they fall and break! Maybe try a polite sign on the outside of the door to please not leave breakable recycling items when the store is closed?

Because we live in the city center, surrounded by cafés (and, thus, drunk people) a lot of things aren't possible.
We used to have a bag underneath the letterbox, but someone found it funny to thrown some fireworks through the letterbox and it went up in flames. We still occasionally find cigarette butts on the doormat, which have been stubbed out on the door outside. A metal box isn't really an option since there isn't much space between the wall and the door when it's open and there isn't a space outside for a box (plus it wouldn't survive long).
We do lock the letterbox some days of the year (King's Night and Day and the December 31 and January 1), but we get mail before 10am several times a week.
I will put a sign up in the window next to the door when we rearrange the shop window, which should be soon.
My ankle is looking slightly better this morning. I put on my hiking boots, my sturdiest shoes. I did have to unlace my left boot before I could put in on. Moving my ankle left and right isn't a problem, up and down is. Which will mean a fun day going up an down the stairs to where we keep the lightbulbs.
