One of the huge problems with these evolved usages is the expectations that newcomers know and use them. Even worse is the demand that other regions adopt them. Worst is refusal to even consider that misunderstanding is an issue, e.g. German tourist couple in Florida murdered because they did not understand that they were being mugged.

Yep. I used to work for Pepsi and it used to drive my boss nuts because I would use coke to mean Pepsi.
