The point here is to provide a robust service: IP over USB will work even if the reMarkable cloud service is gone, and even wifi service is non-existent. It is also not dependent on installing any software on the computer, and is therefore OS-independent.

You will be able to enjoy your reMarkable even in the post-Apocalyptic world. A comforting thought.

For the extremely security conscious I guess a physical connection might feel more comforting than wifi as well.
