Laon and Cythna; or, The Revolution of the Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century. In the Stanza of Spenser.
This is the text of the original edition, printed in late 1817, which Shelley's publisher refused to distribute, and which was then suppressed, amended, and published as
The Revolt of Islam in January 1818. The changes removed the incestuous relationship of Laon and Cythna, and softened the most direct attacks on Christianity.
Unfortunately, despite claiming to include them, the version of
The Revolt of Islam printed in the "Oxford Shelley" misses the variants from the original
Laon and Cythna. Hence, this is a useful companion volume to
charleski's beautiful edition of Shelley's
Complete Poetical Works.
