You might take a look at the 8" Galaxy Tab A, I know a friend has one he likes a lot. I've tried it and found it nice and I think it falls around your budget. The Tab S has a higher resolution screen, but that makes it quite a bit more money unless you can find a sale (in the US I got my Mini 4 for $100 off at Best Buy not long ago, may be similar sales in Canada from time to time). Perhaps with Black Friday coming up (that's a thing in Canada now right?) you can find a deal on something inexpensive, but not "cheap".

As has been discussed here many times it depends, for some it makes a big difference for others not much at all, as not all eyes are the same. For myself I can read on my cheapo little Fire 7 tablet, if you want to go way back I used to read on a Palm III (& Palm Tungsten, Treo Phone, Pocket PC, etc.), but find it much more comfortable when reading for hours to have a somewhat higher resolution screen than some do but I don't find it essential. The best thing is if the OP can find some on display to try in hand and spend a little time with (play with the brightness, do some reading, etc.).
