Thank you, Kovidgoyal. Never had to "embed" a picture in a Word file before. Searched the web and found this which worked. I post it as others may lack the knowledge as I did.

With your Word document open, click the Office button*, top-left of the window.
Select Prepare > Edit Links to Files.
Select and highlight the images you want to convert from the list.
Select the option to Save picture in document.
Click the Break Link button.
Click Yes to confirm.

I also found a solution by saving the docx file as an html file and then loading that into calibre. When converting to epub there was difference between the two methods as to how the images were displayed. Not sure yet which was best but it gives me something to "play" with. Again, thank you.
