Another example would be a pack of good sled dogs being more reliable than a snowmobile when a crucial part fails on a snowy trail in the middle of nowhere. Now the native has no snowmobile and lacks the ability to build a sled or care for the dogs.
"Improvement" is relative, speed and efficiency is another matter. Sometimes it's about speed. The horse was replaced by the auto, but at what cost to the planet environmentally? No I'm not a Luddite, and have no intentions of going to live on a farm 
Just pointing out that progress is not always linear.
